Remembering Dr Tony Williams

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Dr Tony Williams, following a long illness, on Thursday 16 July 2026.

Tony's contribution to the Dickens Fellowship was immeasurable. As well as being an inspiring, knowledgeable and popular speaker at meetings and conferences, he was Honorary General Secretary from 1999-2006 and President from 2015-2017. He was also Associate Editor of The Dickensian for many years. 

We understand that he died peacefully and pain-free, having been barely conscious for several days, and we extend our sincere and heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.

Tony's funeral took place at Chilterns Crematorium, Amersham, Buckinghamshire, UK, at 12:45pm on Wednesday 19 August 2026 and was attended by representatives of the Dickens Fellowship as well as by many of Tony's family, friends, colleagues and former students.
