An announcement about Professor Michael Slater MBE

It is with great sadness that we learned today, 27 November 2025, of the death of Michael Slater MBE, Emeritus Professor of Victorian Literature at Birkbeck College.

Michael served as President of the Dickens Fellowship from 1988-1990 and was Honorary Editor of The Dickensian from 1968-1977.

He founded the annual Dickens Day Conference at Senate House in London and his contribution to the field of Dickens studies over the last 60+ years is unsurpassed.  

He will be sorely missed by us all.
