Donald Hawes

The Dickens Fellowship are very sorry to learn of the death of Donald Hawes.  Donald died peacefully in hospital on Saturday 14 November having been diagnosed recently with advanced cancer both of the liver and the pancreas and had been unable to eat or drink very much at all for some time.  Dickensians will remember him from his regular radio and television reviews in our journal, as well as from his other contributions to scholarship in books like Who's Who in Dickens (2001), Charles Dickens (2007) and his highly-respected edition of Barnaby Rudge in the Everyman Dickens series (1996). He had also published works on George Eliot and W M Thackeray, including co-editing (with Geoffrey Tillotson) the Thackeray volume in The Critical Heritage series (1968). A fuller obituary will appear in The Dickensian in due course. We extend our deepest sympathy to his widow.

Donald's funeral will take place on Tuesday 1 December at 12.45 at Breakspear Crematorium, Breakspear Road, Ruislip, Middx HA1 7SJ (01895 556560). No flowers by request but any donations to go to Macmillan Nurses. Donald's widow's address is 32 The Fairway, North Wembley, London HA0 3LJ.
