DICKENS DAY 13 MAY 2010
'Mr Weller turned and began wending his way towards Leadenhall Market, through a variety of by-streets and courts...' The Pickwick Papers, chapter XXIII On Thursday 13 May, the date on which Mr Pickwick set out on his adventures, a great many people wended their way to Leadenhall Market to celebrate the first City of London Dickens Day. Ladies in crinolines and curlpapers braved the low temperatures to bring colour and humour to the event, which was inaugurated by Gerald Dickens, the great, great grandson of Charles Dickens. Mr Pickwick (Stephen Jarvis) lent his benign presence to the occasion, and members from City Pickwick Clubs attended. Dickens Fellowship members from Eastbourne, Nottingham, and Rochester and Chatham travelled to London to take part in the event, and readings from The Pickwick Papers were provided by Gerald Dickens, Colin Benson, John and Ann Cox, Thelma Grove, Paul Hampton, Michael Slater, Giles Watling and Anita Fernandez-Young.
City of London Guides had devised Dickens-themed walks which brought walkers to Leadenhall, where they found Fellowship members manning the Charles Dickens Museum stall, and costumed characters browsing among the stalls and eateries of this beautiful Victorian market-place. It was a fun day - and planning has already started for Dickens Day 2011.
