Fellowship

This is the second version of the website established for the Fellowship as a whole. The new design will be developed, especially with regard to the use of images, as time allows. However, the direction of more far-reaching developments has yet to be decided.

In the Centenary Membership Survey of 2002, two members commented as follows:

  • The ... website has very informative content, but not much opportunity for interactive activities. For members of the Fellowship not living close to a local branch, it may be a way of making them feel more involved e.g. if site had a message board, or discussion topics. Even, perhaps an "internet" branch could be formed.
  • Sometimes I visit the web-site, but, I am sorry to say, that is not very exciting. Make it livelier, show more of the treasures normal members will never see (normal members-not students or researchers).

Other possible developments include:

  • establishing a picture gallery of portraits and characters;
  • providing access to early issues of The Dickensian;
  • providing access to other material not widely available, such as issues of Household Words and All The Year Round;
  • relaying Fellowship events live to members on line;
  • making recordings of Fellowship events available to members on line.

It is hoped that some of these developments, together with the provision of more pages on the life and works of Dickens, can be pursued in partnership with the Centre for 19th-Century Studies at Birkbeck College, University of London.

We are most grateful for the donations made by the late Martha Rosso and by Honor Vine to the fund established for Internet activities.
